Lamb pelts are an integral criteria for selecting quality Karakul breeding stock. To document pelt patterns and characteristics, photos must be taken of the newborn lamb and submitted to the American Karakul Sheep Registry along with the registry application. The ultimate pattern is the beautiful, rare, water-wave patterned birth pelt, also called a Moiré or broadtail Persian. Lambs with this type of pelt are so soft, silky, and slippery they can be difficult to hold. Another sought-after pattern is the corrugated pattern with pencil-like pipe curls, as illustrated by our twin lambs pictured on our home page. |
